Machine learning is set of techniques to make computers better  at doing things that humans(traditionally) can do better then machines.

For example - 

Multiplying two big numbers

This can be done easily with computers in less than a seconds

Similarly searching for some data is through millions of files then the search operation is extremely difficult for humans, but computers can do it matter of nano seconds.
